Two fancied teams squared off at the SKYex on Tuesday evening and it was the visitors Chesham United who came away with their 100% record intact as the Generals triumphed by the odd goal in three courtesy of a 90th minute Connor Roberts strike. Manager Ritchie Hanlon made a couple of changes from Saturday’s starting XI with both skipper Sanmi Odelusi and Tarik Moore-Azille returning from suspension in place of Hassan Jalloh and Taylor Miles. It was indeed Odelusi who forced the first save of the game in the seventh minute, having received the ball just on the edge of the box from Amos Nasha, the United skipper span his marker and struck a shot that Generals ‘keeper Cian Moore did well to push over the crossbar. Just six minutes later it was Jacob Adams’ turn at the other end to show his agility as Jordan Edwards worked space for a shot 20 yards out, his well struck effort being pushed away by the United stopper at full stretch diving to his left. As the teams settled into more of a midfield tussle, the next half chance took until 33 minutes and it came the way of the home side. Sam Ashton played the ball wide to Omar Rowe who turned his marker on the bye-line before pulling the ball back to Ashton but the United striker saw his fairly tame effort blocked by the visitors’ defence. Four minutes later Adam Liddle set up a shooting chance for Rowe who having turned past a defender hit a low shot that went inches wide of the upright and the half closed out without a goal for either side although it was quite an entertaining 45 minutes of football. The early minutes of the second half saw Chesham play a smart throughball towards former United winger Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick but the pass was fractionally too well hit and Adams was out quickly to block the ball away as the Chesham man arrived. The deadlock was finally broken in style on 52 minutes as Liddle again picked out a pass to Rowe, the former Chesham loanee taking aim from the edge of the box and curling a perfect shot beyond Moore’s reach into the far corner to give the home side the lead. Just before the hour mark United could have notched a vital second, Nasha fired in a corner kick from the left that Jerry Wiltshire rose highest to meet however his header didn’t have enough purchase and the ball flew the wrong side of the upright. Two minutes after United almost went two goals in front, the scores were level. Hippolyte-Patrick received the ball inside the United box and fired low past Adams into the corner of the United net. With the win for either side now there for the taking, it was the visitors who came on strongest as the game wore on. Zak Joseph and Hippolyte-Patrick combined well on the right side with the latter crossing to T’Sharne Gallimore who fired weakly straight at Adams and then just two minutes later a cross into the United area was met by Hippolyte-Patrick but Adams was again on hand to claw the ball wide to keep United level. Now in the final ten minutes, Joseph saw a long range effort comfortably held by Adams and with play switching ends minutes later United substitute Steve Ngunga collected a cross-field pass and set the ball aside to Odelusi only for his 20 yard effort to fly wide of the Chesham goal. With a point apiece looking a fair bet, this all changed as we hit 90 minutes with Chesham defender Connor Roberts receiving the ball inside the righthand corner of United’s area, he took a touch before blasting the ball past Adams to seal three points for the visitors to take home with them.
