Two evenly matched sides in the table fought out a goalless draw on Tuesday evening, the first goalless game at the SKYex this season as a missed United penalty just after the hour mark cost Paul Hughes’ side a deserved three points.

The Manager made a solitary change from the team that brought maximum points back from Yate with Danny Green coming in for Roger James who took a place on the bench.

Swindon ‘keeper Josh Gould was the first to be tested in just the sixth minute when Moses Emmanuel collected the ball in the box, weaved around his marker and got in a shot that was held low down by Gould. Gould was again called upon less than ten minutes later when a Reece Cole free-kick into the danger area was met by Charlie Wassmer, his header being pushed away to safety by the visiting stopper.

United continued to push forwards with the visitors having a share of possession but being comfortably repelled by the United defence. Emmanuel clipped a neat pass into the path of Adam Liddle but his effort was high and wide of the target and then on 37 minutes the same pair combined, Liddle’s shot was blocked back to Emmanuel and as he pulled the trigger he was denied a shot at goal by a superbly timed sliding block from Swindon skipper Mat Liddiard.

The visitors finally created a brace of chances for themselves about five minutes from the break, firstly a Zack Kotwicka shot was blocked en route to goal six yards out by Wassmer and a minute later the same player saw another effort blocked, this time the ball ran wide to Joe Tumulty who crossed to top scorer Harry Williams who managed to fire over from inside the six yard box.

The final minute of the half saw a chance a apiece go begging, firstly for United Danny Green was inches wide after collecting an Emmanuel pass and this was quickly followed at the opposite end by a 25 yard Williams drive that only just cleared Jacob Adams crossbar.

First opening of the second half went to the visitors as a neat back-heel from Brad Hooper set up a shooting chance for Henry Spalding but his drive from the edge of the box was off target.

Right on the hour mark Gould parried a deflected shot and as he attempted to reclaim the loose ball Emmanuel nipped in first and was brought to the ground with referee D’Urso pointing to the spot. Emmanuel himself took the kick but for the first time this season failed to hit the target as his kick zoomed over the crossbar and we remained goalless.

The final ten minutes threw up a couple more chances for United to seal the points without being taken. Cole fired the ball across the park to Emmanuel who saw his 18 yard effort drift wide of the target and a couple of minutes later the same player was set up by Liddle and this time his goalbound effort was pushed away by Gould to safety.

While a point is a point in the scheme of things in the balance of chances created United will be unhappy not to have taken the full three points especially with the visitors surprisingly offering so little up front that I do not believe Jacob Adams had a serious save to make all evening, that’s football I suppose.
