After two weeks without a fixture, Paul Hughes’s side put in their most dominating performance of the season, putting four past Dorchester Town at the SKYex whilst also striking the woodwork no fewer than three time in the process. The manager made several changes to the side narrowly defeated at Truro, Simon Grant returned between the sticks in place of the injured Jacob Adams, suspended duo Sanmi Odelusi and Adam Liddle were replaced by Reece Cole and Jamie Hanlon while Cole Brown and Roger James were rested on the bench with Jean-Baptiste Fischer and Moses Emmanuel returning to the starting XI. A first start for Jamie Hanlon after 19 appearances from the bench saw the young forward quickly into the action and with just four minutes played he exchanged passes with Danny Green before striking a 20 yard shot that Magpies ‘keeper Harry Dillon did well to push wide. With ten minutes played Reece Cole won possession 30 yards from goal and instinctively fired goalwards, his effort beating Dillon only to go just the wrong side of the upright. The deserved breakthrough came in the 19th minute, Hanlon was bundled over in the Magpies area leaving referee Blades little option but to point to the spot. Moses Emmanuel, despite blazing his last spot kick over, was confident enough to step forwards and coolly sent Dillon the wrong way from 12 yards. With the visitors offering very little going forwards that looked like troubling Simon Grant in the United goal, it was 32 minutes when the ball hit the back of the net again as United doubled their lead as Cole played a perfect pass into the run of Emmanuel and he held his poise to fire across Dillon into the bottom corner for his and United’s second. United continued to dominate the half from there on. With 39 minutes played Danny Green fired in a low centre from the right side, Emmanuel smartly stepped over the ball allowing it to run to Hanlon who was denied his second United goal by Dillon who stood tall and blocked the shot away to safety. Number 3 and another Emmanuel hat-trick arrived on 41 minutes, Cole again chipped a perfect pass over the defence, Emmanuel got to the ball before the on-coming Dillon who caught the striker in the head and once more referee Blades pointed to the spot. Emmanuel again took charge and this time smashed the ball down the middle. Four more chances came United’s way in the final couple of minutes of the half. Cole tried his luck from distance with Dillon fumbling his shot wide, the resultant Cole corner kick was headed back across goal by Tarik Moore-Azille finding Green who saw his header fly across goal and wide. Cole again chipped over the defence to Emmanuel as we hit stoppage time, this time the strikers flicked effort was held by Dillon and then just as referee Blades was about to bring the half to a close, a Cole corner was met by Josh Lelan but his header was just wide and we went in at the break with a more than deserved three goal lead. United started quickly once again after the break, with just three minutes played Emmanuel set the ball off to Green, his 20 yard drive being tipped onto the crossbar by Dillon at full stretch and a couple of minutes later Hanlon collected the ball on the edge of the box but his shot on the turn was held by the ultra busy Dillon who was making his League debut for the Magpies. In the 57th minute a rare, and almost opportunistic, opening for the Magpies saw Keith Emmerson charge down an attempted Grant clearance although the United stopper was able to jog to the ball and pick it up in front of goal quite comfortably, he was however worked a little harder a minute later as Charlie Gunson tried his luck from range but Grant held on easily. Just two minutes later a similar situation at the other end saw Emmanuel dispossess Dillon before rolling the ball to the on-coming Cole on the edge of the box, his well struck effort being turned wide by the recovering Dillon, the stopper doing extremely well again minutes later after Paul Field and Emmanuel had combined well to set up Hanlon, again Dillon stood in his way by tipping the shot wide. The woodwork saved the Magpies again on 64 minutes as a sweeping one-touch United move saw Green play the ball left to Cole, his first time low ball being hit goalwards by Emmanuel only for the ball to clip the post and go wide. From this point changes to the United side saw a welcome return to action from the bench for Hassan Jalloh after a spell on the sidelines due to illness and with five minutes left to play United had another, Cole played a long ball forwards to Emmanuel from just outside his own box, the striker advancing with the ball and although Dillon stood tall to block him out initially, the strikers experience and composure saw him regain the ball and slot it home for his third United quad-trick following his two last season against Hendon and Wimborne Town. Stoppage time almost saw United grab a fifth, Jalloh advanced from halfway before playing the ball right to Emmanuel, he in turn fed Roger James whose neat back-heel found Cole, his drive crashing back off the upright and United had to settle for just the four.
