Firstly I must congratulate Derrick Matthews and his able helpers for even getting today’s game on following the heavy rain in the past 24 hours as another postponement would have made next week impossible as we already have 5 games in 8 days to play.

Sadly this was to prove a most unwelcome Easter holiday as Paul Hughes’ side suffered back to back 3-0 defeats having lost at Winchester 48 hours earlier and this result now puts us out of the play-off race for this season.

With the squad continuing to be rotated due to various injuries and knocks, the two positives from today were the return between the sticks of Jack Smith after more than a year on the sidelines and a return from injury for the impressive Paul Field who has missed the last few games.

The first opening fell to United in the opening ten minutes as Moses Emmanuel received the ball on the edge of the Generals box but his shot on the turn was held by ‘keeper Dante Baptiste.

Four minutes later the visitors were ahead when former United winger Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick raced into the United box from the right before clipping the ball over Smith’s dive and into the net.

Smith showed what we’ve been missing for the past year in the 22nd minute, Omar Rowe played a corner in low to Matthew Ridley who flicked the ball goalwards only to be denied by an acrobatic tip over from the United number 1.

34 minutes had elapsed when Smith was again called upon, Jeanmal Prosper crossed from the right to Hippolyte-Patrick but Smith was down quickly to smother the ball at the wingers feet.

Four minutes from the break Danny Green slid the ball through to Emmanuel, the United striker and Baptiste collided in challenging for the ball and with referee Warren allowing play to continue Emmanuel was quickest up and got to the ball first wide of the goal, his shot going across the face of goal to be cleared by the Chesham defence and the half concluded with the visitors a goal in front.

Chesham started in the ascendancy after the break, Zak Joseph sliced the ball wide when well placed and just a minute later a sloppy pass at the back by the home side allowed another former United man Scott Shulton a clear run at goal, the midfielder moving around Smith’s dive before rolling in his sides’ second of the afternoon.

Just past the hour a neat United move saw Emmanuel turn past Prosper on the left, the striker pulling the ball nicely into the path of the on-coming Jean-Baptiste Fischer but his effort was well blocked by a sliding Ridley and the danger was cleared by the Generals defence.

Smith was again in the action in the 69th minute, a long punt upfield found Joseph, he played the ball sideways to Bradley Clayton, his shot being tipped around the post courtesy of a full stretch Smith dive.

United had the ball in the Chesham net on 73 minutes when Reece Cole played Emmanuel through, the United man firing past Baptiste only for play to be pulled back by a pesky assistants flag for offside, sadly a correct decision albeit frustrating.

Minutes later the same two combined although this time Emmanuel was onside but his driven cross-cum-shot flew through the six yard box and wide of the far post.

Stoppage time saw United go close when a Cole free-kick from 25 yards needed to be pushed over by Baptiste and then two minutes later United were caught by a sucker punch as Joseph broke through on the break, rounded Smith and rolled in number three for his side and that was it for the game with United now having a few days break before an impossible 5 games in just 8 days to end the campaign.
