Merthyr Town 0
Hayes & Yeading Utd 5

Hayes & Yeading bounced back from the recent drop in form with a comprehensive 5-0 victory across the Welsh border at Merthyr Town on a damp December Saturday afternoon as Moses Emmanuel netted another hat-trick taking him to 18 goals in all competitions thus far.

This game saw a return to fitness for Ravan Constable between the sticks, a return to midfield for the newly signed Scott Donnelly and a full debut for former Manchester United youngster Josh Bohui in a three pronged United attack.

What was to be a rare moment of “panic” for United came on 11 minutes as Constable endeavoured to see the ball out for a goal-kick only to clear the ball weakly under pressure from the home side with the ball going straight to Corey Shephard at the corner of the United box, his first time effort thankfully was poor and the United stopper got back in time to grasp the ball.

Thereafter the visitors started to take control in pretty much all areas of the pitch, opening the scoring in the 19th minute as Jack Williams’s long throw on the left found Francis Amartey who worked past his marker before pulling the ball back to strike partner Moses Emmanuel who slammed it past Jaimie Cogman in the home goal.

The lead was doubled just seven minutes later when a deft flick from Emmanuel sent Omar Rowe on one of his familiar charges through on goal, the midfielder outstripping his marked before confidently firing past Cogman from the edge of the box.

On the half hour two increased to three as a long Scott Donnelly clearance down the right side saw Cogman race outside of his box to meet Emmanuel, the United striker taking possession in the challenge and with the goal now gaping he fired home from 20 yards to give United an almost certainly unassailable lead.

Shortly after Donnelly went close with a free-kick from the edge of the box before the home side carved out their best chance in the 36th minute when Daniel Barnard rose highest to send a header from a free-kick goalwards, Constable did well to push the effort away but only as far as Keyon Reffell who could only manage to hit the side netting from a tight angle with all the goal to aim at and then a few minutes later another chance for the hosts saw Dylan Jones advance but his shot was too high to trouble Constable.

As the break approached Rowe again went close as he advanced from an Emmanuel pass, this time his shot however went the wrong side of the upright and it was to be 3-0 to United at the break.

United were quickly out of the blocks again after the break, Emmanuel picked out Josh Bohui on the right, he took a quick touch inside to make room to shoot only for his effort to be blocked wide by the home defence.

Barnard again went close for the home side on 51 minutes, getting his head to a Kerry Morgan free-kick with the effort drifting wide of the upright and United’s three goal lead remained intact and almost increased shortly after when Amartey collected a Donnelly pass and ran at the home defence, his effort on the run however also went the wrong side of the post.

Rowe made a surging run from halfway but just cleared the bar from 20 yards with the shot and at the other end soon after Reffell broke through the United defence and aimed his shot for the near post with Constable pushing the effort wide of the goal.

With 12 minutes remaining United did finally get a fourth as Amartey collected the ball on the right of the Merthyr box, after twisting and turning his markers inside out he fired a shot across Cogman into the far corner for his sixteenth of the campaign.

Emmanuel went close to completing his hat-trick five minutes from time after an Amartey shot was saved, the ball ran to Hassan Jalloh who set up Emmanuel but his curling effort was wide of the target.

The hat-trick was completed with a fifth United goal in stoppage time though, Jalloh fired in a shot from 20 yards that Cogman did well to keep out however the loose ball ran to the deadly boot of Emmanuel and he fired home his eighteenth of the campaign and United were to return across the border with a big three points considering the sides above all dropped points.
