1st Team Match Report

St Ives Town 1
Hayes & Yeading Utd
Hayes & Yeading’s quest for a first maximum of 2017 was denied 12 minutes from time when the hosts were awarded a somewhat soft penalty which cancelled out a stunning strike from Connor Toomey on his return from injury.

The plus at the start was that the game took place as we had all arrived a decent time before kick off with the pitch looking very boggy and with the middle being heavily sanded, this obviously gave little chance of any sort of flowing football throughout the game.

The first ten minutes were to produce a few openings that were not taken however. In just the third minute Lewis Putman forced a save from home custodian Tim Trebes, the stopper diving to push a 25 yard free-kick around the post. The Saints soon made an opening of their own when Jack Bradshaw and Danny Kelly exchanged passes on the left side of the United box, the former’s cross being deflected into Danny Boness’s grasp.

Within a minute Trebes was again required to keep his side level, Mitchell Weiss collecting inside the Saints box, his shot from an angle being tipped into the side netting by Trebes.

It was then almost half an hour before another note hit the book, and what a strike it was to give United the lead. Soloman Sambou collected the ball on the right side midway into the Saints half, his square pass to Connor Toomey being smashed first time like a rocket from 30+ yards leaving Trebes standing like a statue as the ball crashed into the Saints net.

And that was it for the first half.

The second half was to provide a bit more action as the players got used to playing on the dreadful surface. First chance again fell to United, an Anthony Edgar corner kick dropped in the box, a game of ping-pong played out until Lewis Putman poked the ball goalwards only for his effort to be hacked off the line.

For the home side, good work by Ben Seymour-Shove out wide created an opening for Bradshaw but his effort was too high and then at the other end Sambou picked out Edgar in the box, he turned his marker sharply before seeing Trebes push his effort away. Soon after Sambou found Weiss but like Bradshaw earlier, his effort was too high.

Twenty minutes remained when panic set in inside the United box as the ball was scrambling around six yards from goal before Boness did well to finally pounce on the loose ball. The Saints were then inches wide with a drive from the edge of the box before a penalty was awarded with 12 minutes remaining. Jordan Jarrold broke at pace into the left side of the United box and what appeared from a distance to be the slightest of touches by Melanious Mullarkey sent the defender sprawling on the ground with referee Bates pointing straight to the spot (some say what goes around comes around as we gained three points against St Ives in similar fashion at Holloways Park).

Jack Higgs stepped up and despite Boness getting a hand to the penalty kick, it had enough power to hit the back of the United net.

Two minutes from time it could and probably should have been worse for United, a defensive error by the corner flag gifted possession to the Saints, the ball being rolled to substitute Jared Cunniff who from 10 yards with the goal gaping managed to fire high and wide of the target.

The final chance of the game fell to United just inside stoppage time, Josh Chamberlain volleyed the ball across the box, skipper Darren Locke rose highest to head goalwards but Trebes caught the ball with little concern and a draw it was to be.
