A James Hayter strike for the Hawks just before the hour mark saw United to defeat at Westleigh Park and leaves both sides still looking downwards as the season draws towards it conclusion.

On a sandy, bumpy Westleigh Park, both sides had early openings with the Hawks Scott Donnelly hitting the side netting of James Hamon’s goal before a high lofted cross by Luke Ifil at the other end required a tip over from home ‘keeper Ryan Young. The resultant corner picking out Sean Cronin but his header was straight at Young.

Five minutes later and the home side should really have at least troubled Hamon. Brian Stock crossed from the right side to the unmarked Matt Paterson who headed back across the United goal and wide of the far post.

James Hayter then exchanged passes with Ben Swallow, the latter’s shot being dealt with comfortably by Hamon before United went even closer at the other end. Max Worsfold played the ball forwards to Elliot Benyon, United’s top scorer out moving on to the ball and hitting a shot that beat Young only to crash back off the Hawks crossbar.

Garry Haylock’s side continued to push forwards at this point. Adetayo Osifuwa found Ifil on the right, his cross was cleared but only to Ashley Lodge who hit a first time shot that Young did well to handle low down at the near post. An almost identical move and result occurred minutes later, this time the creator of the chance was James Hamon, his long punt before cleared to Lodge and again Young was equal to his shot.

The last serious effort of the half went to the home side, Donnelly trying his luck with a free-kick from fully 25 yards, he beat the wall but the ball went just wide of Hamon’s far post and it was all square a the break.

Early chances in the second period again came and went, for each side. The home side went close on 47 minutes when a centre from the left was not properly dealt with in the United box, the ball falling to Hayter who hooked the ball over his head, clearing Hamon only for Darren Purse to be perfectly placed to clear the ball off the line.

United were immediately on the attack at the other end with Worsfold and Luke Williams combining before Dan Strugnell’s interception took the ball to Benyon who advanced into the box only to be denied by the quick reactions of Young who was off his line quickly to block the ball away.

Ten minutes later and the home side inflicted what was to be a critical blow to Garry Haylock’s side. A run down the left side saw the Hawks player dart between two United defenders before rolling the ball in to the centre where former Bournemouth striker Hayter fired past Hamon’s dive to give the Hawks the lead.

With the home side as desperate for points as United, the Hawks seemed to shut up shop after going ahead and rely on trying to hit United on the break, something that almost brought them a second with 15 minutes remaining. The Hawks won a free-kick on the right hand corner of the area, Swallow stepped up and beat all and sundry with his shot only for the ball to smash back off the United crossbar.

As the game entered its final stages, Hawks substitute Shamir Mullings broke away past Purse before missing thew target and then in the first minute of stoppage time the same player broke free but was denied by Hamon who palmed his drive away.

In the sixth minute of stoppage time United almost salvaged a point when a corner from the left saw Ismael Ehui get his foot to the ball in front of his marker at the near post but sadly it went straight in to Young’s arms and referee Carl Brook brought the game to an end before Young could even get up off the turf.
