Phil Babb went with the same starting XI that had run Barnet so close a week previous as we welcomed our FA Cup conquerors Tonbridge Angels back to Kingfield on Saturday afternoon while the visitors lined up with former United men Clark Masters and Phil Appiah in their starting XI.

After around 15 minutes of midfield play with very little in the way of goalmouth action it was Frankie Merrifield's quick turn in the box on 17 minutes that drew a trip from Appiah and referee Mr Quelch immediately pointed to the spot. Jake Reid stepped up to bag his eighth of the season by sending Masters the wrong way from 12 yards.

Merrifield was again in the thick of things five minutes later when Reid was tripped on the edge of the box, Mr Quelch allowed play to continue and Merrifield fired the loose ball goalwards but a good block by Angels skipper Gary Elphick took the sting off the ball and Masters gathered comfortably.

United continued to dominate the chances and a second looked a good bet when Geoff Mitchell and Luke Williams barged their way between the last two defenders only for the latter to put the ball the wrong side of the post with Masters marooned.

A spell for the visitors just after half an hour saw a deep Nathan Green cross from the left being met by a stretching Ryan Watts at the far post, his volley only hitting the side netting. A few minutes later Elphick got his head to a corner from the left side only for his effort to sit nicely in Jamie Young's arms.

United doubled the advantage three minutes from the break with a front runner for United goal of the season. Adam Everitt's long throw was punched down and part cleared only for Jack Mills to move onto the ball a good 25 yards out and hit a thunderbolt that flew like an exocet past Masters into the Tonbridge net.

United appeared a little slow to come out at the start of the second half and the first couple of chances both went to the visitors, albeit without really troubling Young. Elphick got his head to a Henry Muggeridge free-kick but glanced his header wide and just before the hour mark the same player powerfully met a Green corner only for his goalbound effort to be well defended by Everitt who headed over with Young taking the resultant corner.

Charlie Wassmer then did well to block a Chris Piper effort with central defensive partner Dean Inman clearing the ball away.

Twelve minutes remained and both sides seemed to up the tempo. A high ball to the edge of the Angels area was brought down by Reid who saw his shot on the turn deflected wide by Jon Heath and within a minute it was Heath going close at the other end, his dipping volley from 25 yards just clearing the United goal.

Williams nearly celebrated his 100th appearance for United with a goal, Reid knocking down the ball to the midfielder who hit a first time drive that cannoned back off the woodwork with Masters well beaten.

Piper again went close for the visitors but his effort was too high and then as the clock ticked to 90 United rounded things off when a Williams throughball was collected by Mitchell who advanced and fired between the legs of the advancing Masters to seal a deserved three points for the home side.
